AdventureQuest (commonly known as BattleOn) is an online single-player RPG developed by Artix Entertainment in 2002. It is implemented in Flash and uses amerime-style graphics, some of which are animated.

Each account may have up to six characters. The game allows characters to engage in turn-based combat against monsters to accumulate experience points (known as XP) and gold. Characters have a combat level and six stats to train, and some have a specific class. Players may use gold to purchase weapons, armour, shields, spells, pets and misc items to aid them in combat. There are areas to explore, and special events such as holidays and wars, for players to meet new types of monsters and complete quests.

Players may play a limited version of AdventureQuest for free (free players are called Adventurers), or pay a one-time fee of US$19.95(for a limited time it was US$14.95) to become a Guardian and unlock extra features of the game. An X-Boost, which costs an additional US$5, if bought with Guardianship, and $9.95 for existing Guardians, grants the player 10% extra XP per battle and other benefits. Guardians may also play DragonFable and ArchKnight, two other games loosely based on AdventureQuest . As there is a limit on how many free players may play simultaneously, and the free version of the game is very limited, some consider the free version to be simply a free demo, instead of a free web RPG.

Gameplay

Combat

Much of AdventureQuest's gameplay revolves around fighting monsters. In a fight, characters and monsters take turns attacking each other to reduce each other's health (known as HP).

On its turn, a character may attack with its weapon, cast a spell, drink a potion, use special items, or flee. Before doing so, a player may change their character's weapon, shield, armour and pet. On a monster's turn, it may only attack, though some monsters have special attacks, such as healing.

A battle in AdventureQuest

Several factors can affect the outcome of a battle. Both characters and monsters have a "defense modifier" for each of the eight elements; a higher defense modifier means an attack of that element does more damage. There is also a defense modifier for each of the three methods of attacks: melee, ranged and magic; a lower number means greater vulnerability to that method of attack. Players usually change their character's weapon, shield and armour according to the monster's defense modifiers.

Six stats affect the amount of damage inflicted and taken, as well as the probability of an attack being resisted. In addition, pets assist the character in doing extra damage. Strategic use of spells and items will give a character an advantage in combat.

Once a monster's HP drops below zero, the monster dies, and the character is awarded with XP and gold. Sometimes, they may also be rewarded with Z-tokens. If a character's HP drops below zero, the character dies, and has to speak to a non-player character named DEATH to return to Battleon without any penalties imposed.

Shops and equipment

A shop in AdventureQuest

There are six types of equipment which increase a character's effectiveness in combat:

  • Weapons are used to attack and do damage on monsters.
  • Shields affect a character's defense modifier.
  • Armour, like shields, affect a character's defense modifier and also can give extra attacks.
  • Spells are an alternative method of attack.
  • Pets offer a bonus attack.

AdventureQuest has many shops where players may purchase equipment using gold. Every piece of equipment has a level requirement which the character must meet to be able to buy it. If a player regrets buying any equipment, they may sell the equipment at a loss. A character may hold up to eight of each type of equipment at a time, while they may purchase storage space to hold items outside of battle. Most equipment specializes in one of the eight elements (fire, ice, water, wind, earth, energy, light and darkness), but some equipment do not specialize in any element.

Quests, events and challenges

The map of the AdventureQuest world.

Most fights are started through random encounters (by clicking the "Battle Monsters") button, and after winning such fights, characters return to Battleon and can be fully healed by Artix.

Besides random encounters, players can embark on quests. Quests are generally more challenging than random encounters because the character has to fight several monsters, and usually is not given the opportunity to heal in between battles. Some quests entail additional challenges, such as rolling a dice and continuing only if a high number is rolled.

Many quests are started by speaking to non-player characters or exploring reigons on the map. Events are quests which are available for a limited period of time. There are annual events during AdventureQuest "holidays", such as Mogloween and Frostvale, and one-time events, such as wars. In challenges, characters have to defeat as many monsters as possible, but unlike quests, there is no reward or storyline.

Stats

Characters have six stats which affect their success in combat:

A character's statistics
  • Strength (STR) increases the effectiveness of melee (and ranged) attacks, and the success rate of melee attacks.
  • Dexterity (DEX) increases the effectiveness of ranged (and melee) attacks, and the success rate of all types of attacks. DEX also helps in blocking attacks.
  • Intellect (INT) increases the effectiveness of magic attacks, the success rate of magic attacks, and the character's total MP.
  • Endurance (END) increases the character's maximum HP.
  • Charisma (CHA) increases the effectiveness of pets and guests.
  • Luck (LUK) increases a character's chance of going first in a battle, finding a treasure chest, and resisting monster attacks.

For each combat level a character gains, they are given 5 stat points. They may use these stat points to train their stats by paying a stat trainer and defeating them in combat.

If a player regrets training a stat, they may untrain their character's stats by doing the "Death's Domain" quest and losing to Sir Pwnsalot in combat. However, the money spent in training the stat will not be refunded.

Events

Events are a system in AdventureQuest used to keep the content fresh and new. These have ranged from Wars, such as the Carnax Saga, to Holiday celebrations, such as Mogloween (Halloween). Most events are reused, such as the Wizard Games and Frostval events. New events are made from time to time to promote on-going storylines or lead up to future events.

Wars

As well as random encounters and quest battling, there are also events called wars. These are server-wide events that call for a certain amount of monsters to be defeated before players move on to a boss battle, which is available to all players. If a player defeats the boss they will be given the chance to claim a war prize. In the past, players did not actually have to slay the boss to get the rare prize. The matter was resolved by implementing a system where items are now purchased in a store, which can be accessed only after defeating the boss monster. Weapons are the most common war rewards. They often do more damage than weapons available normally or have other advantages, such as powerful specials.

Several new war methods are being held currently, including a manually updated percentage bar and a quest-style war where there is no waiting bar for the boss. Some wars have had a limited time to be completed for the rewards to be made available. Currently, it seems that the manually updated percentage bar is preferred by the staff. The servers can handle 2 different wars at the same time. There is also a type of war where players can fight for one side or another. Whichever side fills their quota for enemies defeated fights a boss and collects the rewards from the chest. Recently, there have only been two wars that were two-sided. They were the Necromancer vs. Paladin war and the Werewolf vs. Vampire war. The Necromancers and the Werewolves won their respective wars.

Also, there are Clan wars. These wars are for those who join a clan.

Holiday Events

To celebrate holidays in the United States and Canada, holidays events are created for players to enjoy. Some of the more known holidays that go along with their real time counterparts are Mogloween (Halloween), Frostval (Christmas), Talk Like A Pirate Day (International Talk Like A Pirate Day), Snugglefest (Valentine's Day), and Grenwog (Easter). These events typically have themes that mirror the holidays celebrated.

Clans

Clans are in-game groups of players who align themselves with a different side in a growing battle. Players may add currency to their clan's stash, raise its HP through minigames, or just fight battles in their clan's name. There are only three clans in which all players may choose from. Once a player has choosen a clan, they may not leave or change to different side.

The differences in clans are:

Geoto: Aligned with the element of earth and melee attacks.

Aerodu: Aligned with the element of air and ranged attacks.

Nautica: Aligned with the element of water and magic attacks.

Z-Tokens

Z-Tokens are a rare currency in AdventureQuest that enables players to buy or rent various powerful items and item storage space or participate in various other events. Z-Tokens randomly appear after battles or can be bought with U.S. dollars. Players can buy them in groups of 2,000, 5,000 or 7,500.

Z-Tokens were first introduced into the game as a way to replace the former system for donating money for items. Many of the items on the former list were removed from the current selection and replaced with slightly different versions. Several different varieties are open for purchase to all players should they have enough tokens. The stronger the item, the higher the price it will usually have.

Controversy and criticism

Guardian Only Login

There is a limit on the number of free players which can play simultaneously. In the early days of AdventureQuest, the limit was fixed at 4,000, but now the limit is at least 8500 and up to over 25,000, and the number of extra slots fluctuates according to time of day and server load.

Once the limit is reached, only Guardians may log in, until sufficient players log out to free up slots or the server limit increases. This can be sometimes difficult, as the limit will occasionally decrease by nearly half, and moments after the server limit is increased, all available slots are taken. Some Adventurer players use the server stats on fan sites to help get a good idea of when to log in. A web browser script was once available that would log the player in the instant it detected a spot on the free server, while others are forced to keep pressing refresh on the login page until login is possible to duplicate the same result. Some players have been known to log in with a free account and leave their computer on continuously to stay logged in, or even put the computer on standby to stay logged in upon restart.

New accounts get 25 free logins upon creation of an account and 48 hours of unlimited free logins after confirming an email address to help them login and get a feel for the game. Each of those free logins allow the player to bypass the limit once, while Guardian accounts can bypass it anytime. Additionally, AQ provides a survey that upon completion grants users another 24 hours of free logins. It is a common occurrence that free accounts are abandoned after their free logins are used up due to the limited server slots.

AdventureQuest may eventually have advertising added to its game site to allow more server load to be purchased, allowing more players to play the game simultaneously, which in turn, would allow for more free slots on the server.

Overloaded servers are a problem with AdventureQuest

Lack of in-game interaction

AdventureQuest is essentially a single-player game, and provides no means of in-game interaction between players. This is perhaps one reason to its small share of the Web RPG genre, behind games like Kingdom of Loathing and MapleStory. Because of this, some commonly requested in-game interaction features include:

  • Battles between players. High level players may find monsters to be boring or tedious and wish to challenge other players. The AQ staff has said several times that this will not be implemented into AdventureQuest, although an AI-based player versus player system has now been added to DragonFable.
  • Item trading. Item trading between players was once offered, but was taken away because the staff could only do it manually, and there were too many requests for them to handle by themselves.

Lack of Features

AdventureQuest is often accused of lacking basic features present in other RPG's. Artix Entertainment rebuts by reminding users that AdventureQuest has weekly updates and is ever-changing, although several other online RPG's possess those qualities as well. Most of AdventureQuest's updates consist of only new, medium level items being added to the game, and rare occurrences of semi-extensive, and sometimes incomplete, quests. AdventureQuest was originally made to be solely a simple, single-player RPG and has progressed too far to consider rewriting to whole game to add the benefits of extra battle features, better side events, or multiplayer actions.

X-Guardian Boost

In the Guardian information page, it says that purchasing the Guardian status lets one's character receive all future updates and features added to the game, both available to free players and otherwise. However, Guardians are given the option to pay for the feature of the X-Guardian boost. Although available in an ultimate package when upgrading to a Guardian account, the extra cost is still factored in. Within X-Guardianship, there are only 5 things received that are different from a normal Guardianship:

  • A separate Hall of Fame list, showing only the highest level X-Guardian characters.
  • 10% extra experience from every battle, whereas normal Guardians get the same amount of experience that free players get.
  • A minimum of 3 health and mana potions at login, instead of 1 for Adventurers or 2 for Guardians. Any potions in a character's possession over the account's corresponding minimum level will carry over logins.
  • A potion limit of 35, instead of 25 for Adventurers or 30 for Guardians.
  • A one-time addition of 10,000 gold.

Free Play

There is an evident lack of free-to-play content being added. Many updates are Guardian only or are showcased only on the Guardian only server. In some cases, an entire update is devoted solely to advanced ways to pay for in-game content, such as X-Guardianship and Z-Tokens. With the AdventureQuest staff proclaiming on the home page that half the game is available only through Guardianship, this leads people to think of the free play more of a free demo, and with constant reminders of Guardianship in-game and out, it is sometimes mistaken as a form of nagware, rather than a simple, free web RPG. Combined with the extremely limited free player access, these factors are often taken as an elaborate way to convince players to pay, instead of allowing people to enjoy the game as a free web RPG.

Lack of customization

Certainly with Adventure Quest being a simple game, it doesn't offer a lot of customization. For instance, the player can't select his/her character's gender, as all the characters have masculine bodies. The faces show gender differences however. For example, female faces have longer eyelashes and usually longer hair, although there are gender ambigious faces too.

Character Classes

There is a constantly growing amount of classes in AdventureQuest. Classes were first introduced after the Dragon War Saga, when the player slayed the legendary Fire Dragon Akriloth and was awarded with the Dragonslayer class, however this was in name only as it had no effect until the real class came out. Each class has a specific armor or two that allow players to use class only abilities. Skills are unlocked with each level gained in the class, which is obtained through quests given by the class trainer. Currently, Adventurers can only go up to Level 5 in class abilities, while Guardians and X-Guardians can go to the full 10.

Fighter

A basic warrior. Their class abilities focus on pure melee attacks. When your fighter class level is 5, you will unlock the knight class.

Rogue

A person that uses a mix of both dexterity and strength to quickly assail an opponent. They primarily use ranged based attacks. It is believed that one needs to make a rogue class level of 5 to become a ranger.

  • This class has an "elite" armor type, the Blarney Rogue Outfit.

Mage

A novice magician that is good with spells and staves. Their abilities lets them cast spells based on any element, and a special ability that turns HP into MP. One's mage class level has to be 5 in order to become a wizard.

Knight

A strong warrior who fights to defend the King of Rennd. To become a Knight, one's fighter class level has to be 5. Their abilities focus on both ranged and melee attacks, making them much more useful than Fighters. Need to have a fighter/mage class level of 5 to become a Paladin.

Wizard

An advanced mage who is extremely good with spells and magic. To become a Wizard, one's mage class level has to be 5. Their abilities are completely magical and focus on powerful spells.

  • This class has many different types/colors of armor but they all are the same stats

Ninja

A class that depends on speed, dexterity and multiple attacks to defeat an enemy. They focus on Darkness powered Razor Fan weapons and katanas.

Necromancer

Necromancers specialize in re-animating corpses and becoming an undead themselves (a Lich). The Necromancer class focuses on Magic and Darkness. To become a Necromancer, one's wizard class level has to be 5.

  • This class has an "elite" armor type, the Obsidian Cloak.

Paladin

A blessed knight on a journey to slay undead. To become a Paladin, one's Knight and Mage class levels has to be 5. Their abilities focus on Melee, Magic, and Light. Their abilities gain immense power when facing Undead foes, such as Zombies.

  • This class has an "elite" armor type, the Golden Holy Armor.

Dragon Slayer

A person who devotes their life to dragon-slaying. Their abilities are weak on their own, as is their Armor, but they become truly deadly when facing any monster with "Dragon" in their name. Their true power is unleashed when wielding the "Dragon Blade". There are also four other elemental Dragon Blades: Light; Dark; Ice; and Mega, which deals its damage in whatever element the dragon is weakest to.

  • This class has Three "elite" armor types, the Elite Dragon Slayer, Golden Dragon Slayer, and Golden Dragon Slayer Eclipse.

Dracomancer

A person who studies under High Khan Cyrus to learn and protect the ancient knowledge of dragons. Their abilities focus on the power of dragons, such as turning their own hand into a fiery dragon talon, or turning into dragons themselves.

Vampire Slayer

A person who slays vampires, werewolves, and the undead. Their abilities are very useful when fighting Vampires, the Undead, or Werewolves.

  • This class has an "elite" armor type, the NightHunter Vampire Slayer.

Sub-Race

While not a true class, Sub-Races are very similar. One can choose to become either a Werewolf,or a Vampire. They both have separate weapons to use, and their armors have special powers. Guardians can also become a Werepyre, a combination of the two which harnesses the power of both Werewolves and Vampires at the cost of not having weapons. They are also given a stronger armor than Werewolves or Vampires, at the cost of being shuned by both the vampire and werewolf races

Non-player characters

Aria : Aria runs the pet shop in the town of Battleon. She was taught how to raise and train animals by the Frogzard Hunter and her Grandmother. She also lets you see Valencia and go on the quest for Drakbots. She also tells adventureers about animal crates.

Artix : Artix is the nickname for the creator of the game, Adam Bohn, so "Artix Von Kreiger" is Artix's character, and NPC. Artix Von Krieger is the head of the Paladin Order run right outside the town of Battleon. He fights for the good of Lore. He is the Paladin Class master and can train you as a Paladin if you are a level 5 mage and knight and level 35 or above. Artix can be found outside standing on the place where Twilly once sat. Some fans even want Artix replaced by Twilly again because they like the red moglin better than him.

Blackhawk: Blackhawk is the Fighter Class master. He is often in the second floor of Yulgar's Inn. Talk to him and learn about Fighters. When you are a level 5 Fighter, you can go train as a knight.

Captain Rhubarb : Captain Rhubarb is a pirate captain in Lolosia. He and his trobble Floyd have a small cottage there. He is also an administrator in real life. He is the games Flash animator. It is believed that he will be the Pirate Class' teacher.

DEATH (The Reaper): When your character dies, he/she is teleported to Nowhere, otherwise known as the Void. There, they meet DEATH, also known as the Grim Reaper. Every time you die he ends up with his "bag of souls" filled up, and lets you go. There is an almost invisible hourglass beside Death, and if you click on it, you have the option to either take the Hourglass Quest (a large quest containing several subquests) or leave. Death appears during the Blade of Awe's rare instant kill mode, and he can be battled at a high level. NOTE: Guardians can travel to Death's shadowy lair without dying by going to the moon in Granemor. You will end up in the Void, where you will fight monsters. Currently, Nightbane is at his full power there, and you can fight him freely.

Drakonnan: Drakonnan is a powerful fire mage whose family was killed by Akriloth, the Great Fire Dragon. He swore revenge on all and took thousands of fire creatures to his slavery. From that moment, the Great Fire War (a massive war between the Ice Realm and Fire Realm) began. Drakonnan fashioned many Fire Orbs, with two as his primary ones. When the Adventurers and Guardians assaulted Drakonnan's Lair, they destroyed his fire orbs along with the primary ones. With their many assaults of Ice Katanas, Ice Spells and Water Spells, they defeated Drakonnan and his army. In the process, Drakonnan's volcanic lair erupted, causing a flow of magma to surge through. Drakonnan disappeared in the volcanic explosion, and is now presumed to be dead.

E : He dumped his girlfriend Buffy so that he could come here and teach others in the art of slaying evil undead! E is often a poet, lingering in the depths of Darkovia and tracking down haunting spirits. You can have him as a guest on various events and quests. He is the class trainer for Vampire Slayers and sells vampire slaying equipment.

Elizabeth : Elizabeth is the Ninja class master. She teaches you Ninja skills every time you gain a Ninjutsu Jadeshard from the Temple nearby. At the level 10 Ninja quest, you must fight her after defeating a group of Samurai Warriors. Elizabeth can be found at the foot of Mt. Dajinn.

Epheel : Epheel is a black spider like thing with red bat like wings that appears at "The Secret" after wolfwing left to fight nightbane and tells how wolfwing is occupied and how he is either dead or tending his wounds. It likes how you are right to the point and says it's leaving a gift for wolfwing and offers to give it to you. Then the game opens up a shop and you can buy it for 100 gold. She says it will protect you from magic attacks, but in the future, it will begin to glow meaning that someone or something has come to do the work of the Devourer and you must hunt it and kill it. Then it leaves and says that you will meet again. After defeating Nightbane she talks to him and says everything is in place and no one can stop him.

The Frogzard Hunter: Based on the late Steve Irwin, the Frogzard Hunter will take you through quests with Frogzard-heavy plots that often involve him being attacked by various frogzards. The Frogzard Hunter has his own shop, where you can get various reptillian pets, Australian style weapons, and a permanent version of the Frogzard Hunter armor.

Galanoth : The head of the Dragonslayer order. At a young age his family was slaughtered by dragons. Because of this, he vowed to get revenge on all dragon-kind. He is the Dragonslayer class master and will teach you to be a dragonslayer.

Kabroz : Kabroz is the brother of Zorbak. He is considered worse than Zorbak will ever be. Kabroz appeared in a few quests but as of recently disappeared. It is believed he is hiding somewhere planning another of his Ebil plans.

Lord Cyrus : Lord Cyrus is the High Khan of the Dracomancers, and is the most powerful of all of them. He leads the Dracomancer Cult and can teach the ways of a Dracomancer. Such skills of a Dracomancer are Half-Dragon Form, Dragon's Heart and Dragon Claw. He is the Dracomancer class master.

NightBane : NightBane is the only one of his race, the Dracopyres. He was a favoured "son" of Wolfwing, and drank the blood of a thousand dragons. After going on a rampage and killing almost all of the Vampires and Werewolves, he fell into hiding when Wolfwing confronted him. Years later, he resurfaced from the underground, and came to rule Darkovia. By converting the Vampires and Werewolves into Dracovamps and Dracowolves with his Nightraiders, he was able to reduce the Darkovian armies. Nightbane cannot convert people into pure Dracopyres, however. It was temporarily believe by some that he killed Wolfwing, that is, until Wolfwing opened his eyes after Nightbane fled his own castle.

Robina Hood : Robina is a noble human Ranger who "steals from the rich and gives to the animals." She can sometimes join you on quests in special events and wars. She replaced twilly outside the inn but was soon replaced by Artix.

Safiria : Queen of the Vampires. She appears quite young, and lives in the Vampire Castle in Darkovia forest. She can turn you into a Vampire and give you quests to increase your Vampire level to have more power. In the Nightbane Chronicles (part 3), she and the Werewolf King took part in the Siege of Nightbane's Castle, and was a special guest in battle only available to Guardians.

Sage Uldor : Sage Uldor is a blind man who can see the future. He predicts that you will ask rumors to a red moglin (Twilly). After you have finished the quest about the rumors, talk to him and he will show you what the Drakel want. Uldor can also let you in the Drakel Black Market. He currently plays a part in the Epic Quest.

Twig : Twig is a little yellow moglin that has a red scarf. He isn't that smart but still a beloved member of the game. (Rumor start) A lot of people believe he is evil, but for now this appears to not be so. Some people believe he is so evil, that he could have been Carnax's master but has been proved wrong by the future war(rumour end). He can be found in the Guardian Tower teleporter room and Yulgar's Inn trying to sneak into BlackHawke's room and steal his fish. He 'wuvs' fish and ice cream and thinks of BlackWawke as a friend.

Twilly : Twilly is a kind and friendly moglin. He is a red moglin that heals Adventurers in the town of Battleon. Twilly often follows you in AdventureQuest and in a recent event, he follows you into a portal that takes you to the future. Twilly wields a wooden stick with a leaf at the top that he uses in combat. However, Twilly is not a very good fighter and often resorts to healing. In events you can get Twilly as a guest, where on his turn he heals you, regenerates your mana or does a weak attack. Recently, he has been replaced by Robina as the greeter when your character first logs in. Robina was in turn replaced by Artix.

Valencia : A rare item hunter that can help you make a Blade Of Awe and use the travel passes. She is also the one currently responsible for the Z-token shop.

Warlic: Warlic is one of the most powerful Mages in the world. He is also in real life AQ/DF's Music Animator. Warlic is the Mage Class master and can sell you various Mage items, including the eight Elemental Magestaffs. In the 2006 Wizard Games, you can challenge him in a duel. Warlic is known to summon the power of the Elemental Lords.

Were-King : The Were-King is the leader of the Werewolves that struggle in the war against their enemies, the Vampires. The Were-King can turn you into a Werewolf. Like Safiria, he can give you quests that will increase your Lycanthropic powers. In the Nightbane Chronicles (part 3), he and Safiria took part in the Siege of Nightbane's Castle, and was also like Safiria a special guest available only to Guardians. In one part before the Siege of Castle Nightbane, Safiria and the Were-King are seen by the player's character, and the Were-King referred to it as, "a hate-hate relationship" when the player's character asked why they were together.

Wolfwing : Wolfwing is the master of the fabled Werepyres; he is an extremely powerful enemy who only offers bragging rights when defeated. Known mostly to the Guardians he has a mysterious past with the also fabled Nightbane. It is not clear if he is really the father of Nightbane, since it was mentioned in the second part of the Nightbane Chronicles:

"Of all my children, you kept the most promise. But now, look at you!" --Wolfwing

During a battle with Nightbane, he was serverely injured and was thought to have died, but at an end scene, his eyes awaken, indicating he did not die at the hands Nightbane. After part three of the Nightbane Chronicles, it was confirmed that Nightbane is the actual son of Wolfwing.

Yulgar : Yulgar is the owner of the Inn in Battleon. He sells many different weapons and can heal you.

Zorbak : Zorbak is a moglin necromancer, who is very ebil.

In appearance, Zorbak is blue with bright red eyes and has a scar on the left or right eye. As the only image used for him, is a profile view, some people claim he has a scar on both eyes, as the image is commonly flipped. The plush doll has a scar on his right eye, however.

He also wears a tattered gray cloak and his face is always in an evil sneer. In early versions (and still sometimes today), he carried a staff with a skull instead of the traditional moglin leaf rod. On this rod are some black rope pieces.

Zorbak is one of the only evil moglins in AdventureQuest, besides his brother, Kabroz.

He sometimes appears in quests where he wants you to take over or destroy things for him and them reward you handsomely, such as the Zorbak/Safiria Challenge (where he teams up with the queen of vampires.)

Recently, in Death's Domain(or the Hourglass Quest), the character will find himself stuck in a well. Eventually, because a pet Daimyo told Zorbak that you saved him as a child in another quest, you play as Zorbak for several battles.

In another recent quest, a farmer named Seahawk becomes follows him around, and asks him to train him as a necromancer. Zorbak begs the player to get rid of him. The player can choose to help or not. The quest has multiple endings. Sometimes, in the Dragons Gone Wild challenges, you have to stop him, his older brother Kabroz (Zorbak is Kabroz backwards), and their undead dragons (they try and fail to take over Lore by bringing dragon skeletons to life.)

Also, sometimes he helps the players rid the world of a greater evil (such as the Carnax and Fire Wars, where he joins forces with players all over the world.)

On Mogloween, he gives players challenges only available during that time, including the ability to fight him.

During Frostvale, he has a hand stealing the presents and the player needs to get them back by defeating him.

In the attic in Yulgar's Inn, Zorbak can be seen tied to a swinging rope.

He can also be found in Warlic's mage shop when you click a certain bag, Warlic threatens to blow his shop up in order to get rid of Zorbak.
