Walgreen, Sr., whose theories of low prices and good service allowed the company to spread and set what are considered some of the first modern chain store standards. [1] There is a notable and often-told story of how Walgreen would deliver the drugs to his customers in the early days of Walgreens. A patient would call the pharmacy and place an order for medication, and Walgreen would fill the prescription, and send it with his assistant for delivery, all while keeping the customer on the phone with small talk conversation. Oftentimes, the prescription would be delivered to the patient while Walgreen was still on the phone. [2] The Walgreen family was absent from the senior management of the company for a short period following the retirement of Charles Walgreen III, however the great-grandson of Charles Walgreen, Kevin P. Walgreen, was made a vice-president in 1995 and was promoted to Senior Vice-President of Operations - Southern Division in 2006.
